Lina has been selling different products in Antigua, Guatemala, for sixty-two years. She reminded me that everyone, even those leading quiet and anonymous lives, want to be remembered. “Please send me this photo. I’ve gathered many pictures of myself over the years and I plan to put them all on the wall in my home, so people will not forget me after I pass away.” #TheAtlasOfBeauty #AroundTheWorld #Guatemala

Lina is the founder of @shefighter , one of the first self-defense schools for women in the Arab world. I met her at her studio, in Amman, Jordan, last year. As a girl, Lina was often bullied by boys because she tried to compete with them. At 14 she started studying Taekwondo, earned a black belt, and competed successfully until her knee blew out. Doctors advised her to find another career. Instead, she chose to spread the word about the practice she loved, empowering women through strength, skill, and confidence. In this way she changed the lives of many of her students who faced street harassment or violence in their own homes. Her courses begun in her parents’ basement 7 years ago, but in the meantime the school grew amazingly and Lina trained thousands of women around Middle East. She says she is often asked by husbands, “Are you going to teach our wives to beat us up? No, I am going to teach your wife to defend herself from violence.” #TheAtlasOfBeauty #AroundTheWorld #Jordan #Selfdefense

I met this lovely lady a few months ago in a picturesque Iranian village called Abyaneh. We couldn’t communicate too much, because of the language barrier, but sometimes words are simply not needed. ———————————— Your feedback has been fantastic regarding The Atlas of Beauty Book and I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. Just imagine twenty million fascinating stories! I wanted to hear hers but the train left after a few seconds from Jodhpur Station. But in The Atlas of Beauty Book, besides 500 portraits, you will find stories from all over the world. The book will be out in the world in just two days and I’m so happy you will hold in your hands very soon. #TheAtlasOfBeauty #AroundTheWorld #India

I met Monika a few days ago on the streets of Skopje, Republic of Macedonia. When she was a little child she experienced a terrible car accident. The drunk driver of another car caused the crash but was never sentenced to prison. Today, 15 years later, this strong and beautiful woman wants to use her knowledge to prevent such terrible events. She now studies law, because laws are not only about punishing, but also about preventing. People like Monika make this world a better place, dedicating their lives to such important causes. #TheAtlasOfBeauty #Skopje #AroundTheWorld

I noticed them through the wide open door of their shop in Recife, Brazil. They sell children’s clothes. They told me that everybody tells them to keep the door closed, because the streets here are sometimes dangerous. But they like to feel the air and sun, and have never had a problem. Janet, 95, and Aida, 87, opened this shop 22 years ago. They make a great team because Janet loves to talk, and Aida likes to listen. #TheAtlasofBeauty #Brazil #AroundTheWorld

Serena makes these little horns which are popular amulets of good luck in Naples and other parts of Southern Italy. They are called “Cornicelli” in Italian and have ancient origins. “This small workshop was opened by my parents. Now me and my sister continue the tradition. I make the horns here and she sells them downstairs, where we have a store.” While traveling In Naples, last year, I discovered a fascinating city, full of traditions, where most people have very strong ties with their families. #TheAtlasOfBeauty #AroundTheWorld #Italy #Naples

She has African and European roots and she loves the diversity of the world. Imane is from Paris and studies arts. Besides going to her university she also works in 3 restaurants and does babysitting to support herself. She had some time before a job interview so when I noticed her she was visiting an art exhibition in Pompidou Centre from Paris. That’s the ideal place to think about her dream. Imane wishes to have a big art gallery someday that will bring artists from very different cultures, together, so she could combine her love for arts and for diversity. #TheAtlasOfBeauty #AroundTheWorld #Paris #Arts

You can’t imagine what a joyful woman is Ania. She has one of the most impressive stories that I ever heard. Ania was born in Poland, 24 years ago, without a right leg. Her mother abandoned her in the maternity hospital and begged a doctor to take care of her. “The doctor kept me illegally in the maternity hospital for many months. She knew that if I would be sent to an orphanage I could never have a normal life, in my situation.” When Ania was 19 months old, she was adopted by a Belgian family. "My parents are amazing. They adopted more children with disabilities and we all grew up happily in the countryside of Belgium, surrounded by animals from farms, enjoying nature. I always loved sports. As a kid, I had many adventures. I was running on the rocks and in the forests, I was always feeling free and independent. I broke my prosthetic several times. Back than it was impossible to have a proper one for sport, because I didn’t have a femur. Every night, before falling asleep, I was imagining myself running and running like an athlete. And my only dream was to have a proper prosthetic for sport. After a while, I started to think that if I will become an well known athlete, my biological mother will see me in the media and I will have the chance to find her in Poland. I really wanted to tell her that I never condemned her for what happened.” The second part of the story, soon. #AroundTheWorld #TheAtlasOfBeauty #Belgium #Poland #Inspiration #Sport
